live from las vegas fox5 news at 6 starts now. donald trump makes an appearance in las vegas....after cancelling his scheduled public events. where the trump campaign is also preparing to open up new headquarters in the valley. and it's down to two possible locations for a new n-f-l stadium in las vegas. where the project stands now--and how it could impact othe businesses. he's accused of luring teenage girls into prostitution through craigslist. how much it will cost him to be released from jail before his trial. this is fox5 news at 6. local. las vegas first he was in...then he was out....but donald trump ended up being back in on his trip to las vegas. i'm christine maddela. i'm john huck. trump quietly came into southern nevada for some private meetings

leaders. fox 5's kevin bolinger joins us live from the newsroom with more on the surprise visit that everyone thought was cancelled. you might remeber just days ago - trump's campaign cancelled a scheduled public event here in las vegas for today....not giving any exclamation. well - it turns out trump came to town anyways but did not do any public events - instead meeting privately with several people. this afternoon at trump international hotel - the republican presidential nominee met with some of his loal hispanic supporters in a meeting room. cameras were only allowed in for a few minutes at the very beginning before being asked to leave the room. but in that time trump talked briefly about the gross domestic product - which is a monetary measure of goods and services produced that determines economic performance. here's a snippet of what he had to say. donald trump: the gdp was reduced last month to 1.1 percent when last month it was at 1.2. everybody thought

catastrophe and they brought it down. it's unheard of numbers, you just don't hear numbers like that. in china if they drop to 8 percent it's like a national catastrohphe and here we are at 1.1 percent. just announced. it's a very serious problem. the country has some very serious problems. it's gonna get worse with these people that don't know what they're doing. trump said his campiagn is doing far better with latinos that anyone understands - adding that people want to see more jobs and that what he plans on doing. a lot of times trips like these also bring private meaning with potential major donors ...somebody like a sheldon adelson....but there has been no confirmation if trump met with

fundraising dinner tonight. live in the newsroom, kb, ffnllv. donald trump's visit came on the same day hundreds of employees rallied outside the trump international hotel. the rally was loud and spirited, filled with handmade signs and banners for hillary clinton. the workers want donald trump to start contract negotations after they won an un many of the protestors wore bright green shirts for the iron workers union. ron milner came here from sacramento to represent iron workers international. he explained why making the trip for this rally was so important to him. " who's for the pocketbook? trump is not for the pocketbook. he's for his own pocketbook. he is for wealthy america. hey, we need wealthy america. but we need the middle class too. the culinary and bartenders union. the culinary union is nevada's largest organization with more than 57 thousand members. the donald trump campaign is opening up a new office in the valley this weekend.... with the help of former arizona governor jan brewer. the grand opening celebration for the "trump-pence nevada victory" headquarters is set for saturday afternoon. the headquarters will be located near paradise and sunset road. the raiders are one step closer to moving to las vegas after a committee narrowed the list to two possible sites for a new nfl stadium. but not everybody is happy about the proposed deal, and how much it will cost taxpayers. fox5s eric hilt is live at one of the proposed stadium sites with details, eric? this is one of the two sites that committee narrowed it down to at yesterday's meeting... this is at russell road just west of the 15 - the other site is at bali hai golf course... i spoke with some

they say they were very excited when they heard an nfl stadium could be going in across the street because it would mean big business. but not everybody shares that enthusiasm - especially because of the huge price tag for the county. this stadium would cost $750 million taxpayer dollars - that would come from a hike in the room tax - and it would be the most public money ever spent to build an nfl stadium... "there's a lot of emotion involved in this on both sides. my office gets a lot of calls, we've got some really rabid supporters of the raiders and building a stadium, we got folks who really really oppose putting a dime of public money in the stadium so there's two sides of the coin here" throughout this whole process the committee has said state lawmakers have

showers and thunderstorms will be popping up around southern nevada for your friday evening. overnight lows drop into the mid to upper 70s. any storms that form will drop heavy rain at times, bring gusty wind, and the potential for localized flash flooding. the moisture stays in place for saturday, so we'll keep the chance of scattered thunderstorms in the forecast throughout the day. the best chance will be over our local mountains, but the valley will certainly have the opportunity to pick up some rain. high temperatures will be on the mild side with mid to low 90s

dries out with more sunshine; temperatures will be in the upper 90s and low 100s. for the first day of school on monday, students will see mostly sunny skies with a high temperature of 103 degrees. an n-h-p trooper survives a shooting during a call overnight-- and it may have been his badge that saved his life! take a look at this picture n-h-p tweeted out. it shows the trooper's badge bent by a bullet. nevada highway patrol says they are grateful he was able to go home safely to his family. the shooting happened just after midnight, on boulder highway near u-s 95. n-h-p says the trooper pulled over a cadillac for a traffic stop. one of the passengers took off, and the trooper chased him. there was an exchange of gunfire, and the suspect was killed. he's being identified by his brother and girlfriend as 41- year-old matthew gibbons. they say the two other people in the car claim he ran from nhp, tried to jump a wall and fired his gun after he was shot by troopers. we're learning more from them about what happened... and will have more tonight at ten and 11. a man accused of using craigslist to lure and force

trafficking appeared in court today. a judge set bail for david coil at 220-thousand dollars during an initial 72-hour hearing. if coil meets bail criteria... he will be ordered to house arrest and must surrender his passport. according to an arrest report... coil operated a prostitution business with several girls, one of whom is his daughter, out of his home. a school teacher informed police of coil after a former student reached out to him for help. police were able to set up a meeting with coil, posing as a teen answering an ad. he was arrested at a fast-food restaurant on wednesday. incoming freshman are getting a one of a kind welcome at unlv. we'll take you to the event that's unique to the university. plus.... it's national dog day! there's a party going on to celebrate your furry friend... where you and your party pup....can join in on

a hiker falls to his death - making the tragedy the third deadly hiking incident at red rock canyon in recent months. this time it happened on a moderate level trail. fox5's abby theodros was at the canyon today and explains how it's not always the tough trails... that can be dangerous. branch whitney: even on a trail someone can trip on a rock, hit their

out and even unfortunately die expert hiker branch whitney says you never know what can happen on a hiking trail...even if the trail is not considered difficult. last night 31 year old justin manering fell 150 feet at icebox canyon at red rock. police say the las vegas resident was on an evening hike with a group - when it happened. a fellow hiker had to walk out far enough to get cellphone reception..and call for help. but by the time rescuers arrived - manering was dead. nats fox 5 stopped by the canyon today to get a feel for it and came across a couple of hikers - some with their children. 41-44 asun pareja, spain: he's sporty kid so he did great. he did better than me. 45-53 scott mcnulty, henderson: we had a great time. its a perfect day. start early before it gets too hot. and ice box is nice because you can get some shade on the south side of the canyon. 54-1:09 theodros: "ice box canyon is known for it's low elevation and narrow slots making it a trail for moderately capable hikers. it's not clear what kind of experience this hiker had but officials with the bureau of land management say the fact that this hiker fell 150 feet - is very telling" 1:11-1:20 kathy august, bureau of land management: if he fell that high...he was not on

because our trail pretty much stays on the bottom of the canyon the moments leading up to manering's fall are unclear - but august says - under the right circumstances - any trail can be dangerous. she says there's a few things you should check for before starting a hike. august: do you have good people coming with uou that know the way?o have the appropriate equipment? are you ready for your hike. bring enough water typically when its hot. beginners heading out to red rock should never go without being prepared. some of the less challenging trails are lost creek and the willop springs loop. new at six tonight... incoming freshman got a one of a kind welcome at the thomas and mack center this morning. at unlv creates.... faculty members gave students motivational speeches...just

seminar. the university's senior vice provost says graduation starts today for students... and the welcome event is all about getting students excited for graduation day. "i feel like this is really nice that they're having a welcome for us because this is where we get to meet new people or like see where our classes are at , just this is really fun for me, it's a new experience in my life." unlv creates is in its fourth year running. about three thousand out of the four thousand incoming freshman went to this morning's event. it's national dog day....and there's a special event going on tonight to help you and your pup celebrate. forget about "happy hour"... a "yappy hour" party.... or "paw- ty" will be held tonight - beginning at 6-30 p-m at the hydrant club downtown. it's free to the public.... and is being held in conjunction with zappos and tito's vodka. raffles will be held - and donations will be collected... to help fund protective vests for metro k-9's. now fox5 weather

cracking down on airlines for giving inaccurate compensation quotes. alaska airlines, american, southwest and united airlines are all getting dinged. they gave bogus information to passengers about how much compensation they could potentially receive for being denied boarding against their will... ...and, for lost, damaged, or delayed baggage. american airlines was fined forty five thousand dollars. alaska airlines and southwest were fined forty thousand dollars each. and united was fined thirty five thousand dollars. the u-s government is making a big investment in amtrack... with a two-and-a-half- billion-dollar loan for its northeast corridor.

biden making the announcement today at the wilmington station that was named after him... talking about the massive, two- point-forty-five billion dollar investment for new trains, track upgrades and platform improvements. it's the transportation department's largest loan ever. biden explained why they're focusing on the northeast corridor. biden says: "this area from boston to washington is home to one out of every seven americans. one out of every three jobs in america is along this corridor. one dollars of every five dollars in the u-s economy comes out of this corridor. this is an overall security net for all of america.
